Charline Granes: Legends are similar to myths ( are you familiar with Greek mythology?) They often are used to explain something such as how the sun rises and travels across the sky, or why it rains etc. So using your knowledge of one of the Island cultures you mentioned create a myth. Many Polynesian islands have volcanic activiy so how or why volcanos erupt would be one idea.
