Student loan for studying abroad in England?

Mack Ukich: hi Chris you will could get the deepest loan in Canada, a british economic employer does no longer lend an foreign places student money as you're able to return abode after your path has finished. additionally dont overlook you will could teach the UKBA which you apart from mght have £10,000 a year for residing expenditures once you prepare to your Tier 4 visa.

August Hubbard: Hi Jane Doe,After reading your question I am not sure if you understand that the UK university system is quite different than the US system and usually studying for a semester is not an option unless you go through a program that allows you to study abroad for a semester. This is primarily due to the UK system use modules that lead to an award by the school and in the US you take individual courses which can be broken down by semesters. Since I am not sure if you understand the UK system and I believe the tuition you are stating is not for foreign students I am left to believe you! may have misunderstood University of Manchester's site. Tuition for international students is higher than what you quote of £4,900 and I would expect you to be quoting between £5,700 - £12,500 for one semester at University of Manchester. In addition the site states a year of expenses would run you approximately £7,700 and for a semester the cost would be £3,850. However when I look at the breakdown of the figures I would say the figure is at best a conservative figure and would depend on how tight of a budget you want to have. Personally I feel the clothing estimate of £360 is quite low especially if you need a suit, dress shirt, shoes, jacket, and any formal type of wear. Even for casual wear such as jeans, shirts, jacket, and shoes I feel the figure is based on discount stores and for a semester of studying I would say you would need £200 - £250 for clothing. Secondly I feel the estimate for other living expenses does not reflect the fact the in the UK laptops a! nd desktop computers from the US are not compatible due to the! different voltages used (110 / 120 volts US & 220 / 240 volts UK). Plus the risk of damage of shipping a desktop computer is not practical due to the risk of damage. So you would need to figure an additional £350 for a UK laptop. Thirdly, I feel the site's estimate on books especially for a semester of study is off a bit and figure the cost would be £150 - £200 for a semester and feel the figure represents that some courses maybe year courses where the same textbook is used. Fourthly you cannot forget the home office student visa application and required level of funding of £3,600 for six months plus their charge for processing a student visa. Finally you cannot forget the airfare to and from the UK which can be more than $2,000 (depending on city of departure, cost of fare at time of purchase, and length of stay). Provided the University of Manchester allows you to study just a semester and you are not doing medical school an very rough estimate would be $22,500. This! figure is based on the current exchange rate of approximately $1.50 per £1, current tuition rates, adjustments made to the projections made, and if the rate changes then you will need to make changes based on the fluctuations in the exchange rate along with any further information that University of Manchester provides to you. For you this means the figure is nothing more than a guide and to get a more exact figure you will need to obtain more precise information. My advice, therefore, would be to speak with the University of Manchester to get a better understanding of the expenses and tuition fees you would most like incur along with understanding if a semster of study is possible....Show more

Lavelle Viveiros: Thank you for your thorough and informative responses! The school website did say that was the tuition for study abroad students per semester, so I'll assume for now that it's correct. I haven't included the cost of accommodation with that, so it could well ! be about $16,000 including housing.

Piedad Bassiti: I did the sam! e thing while i was in undergrad. The guy above me is correct in stating that u are looking at the wrong tuition. That is suspiciously low tuition for international student costs. When i went abroad the cost of a semester for tuition and room was just under $16,000. Add on another couple thousand for food, travel and fun.I had some assistance from my parents when doing this. They paid for whatever it would have cost me in tuition if i were going to my home university for that semester (which was an in-state public school, so it wasn't a lot of money). I then needed to take out $9,000 in federal subsidized stafford loans. You can get these from your home university as long as you file the FAFSA. You are able to take out a certain amount per year (for junior year its $7500. I took out that and the end portion of my sophomore year loans). Your home school will receive the money and forward it to the study abroad program that you are studying through. Then it is applied to your! foreign university's tuition.I suggest you stick to federal loans when studying abroad. If you have maxed them out then i suggest looking into shorter term study abroad programs as it really isn't worth going through the hassle of taking out a bank loan which may come back to bite u in the a$$ someday...EDIT:The guy above me said you need to buy a new laptop when over there. This is wrong. I brought my own laptop w a $50 adaptor and it was fine for all 6 months. Most laptops have built-in converters which adjust the level of electricity coming through the cord. ALSO most UK uni's have very good book reserves where u can borrow books for a few hours, study, and then return them. I didn't buy one text book while over there so you can forget about buying books. You will also not need to pay for the student VISA since you are staying in the country for less than 6 months. :)...Show more
